The Perfect Xmas Present. You're Welcome.

If there's one thing I love more than clothes, it is beauty products. I'm a beauty product whore and I'm not ashamed to admit it. Product monogamy is not in my vocabulary. I cheat on every product I buy with absolutely no guilt whatsoever. And I'm not alone.

I know a LOT of gals who share my obsession so this post is dedicated to those very gals. But don't fret if you're not (for some unfathemobale reason) into eye shadow and eye cream in all possible incarnations. Keep reading because I present to you the PERFECT Christmas present for the women in your life: girlfriend, wife, sister, best friend, mistress, whatever.

It's called Sample Society from BeautyBar.com & Allure Magazine and it's freaking genius. Every month a box of deluxe-sized, luxury brand beauty product samples arrives in the mail all sparkly and new like a Red Ryder BB Gun on Christmas morning. No more trudging through the hobbit-sized section of Target pretending like you're exited that Herbal Essences came out with a new travel-sized shampoo or that some genius put half an ounce of Vaseline in a tube and called it a "new product".

For $15 a month you can get a fancy box filled with 5-6 samples from brands like Philosophy, Diptyque, Dermalogica and Kate Sommerville. We're talkin' perfume, makeup, face cleansers, serums, shampoos, hair products, you name it. And get THIS....it comes with a $15 off code you can use to buy a product that's in the box, so if you like something the month is free!

Sample Society is not the only game in town. In fact, the sample subscription business is going crazy right now. Another favorite is Birchbox.com. I have currently managed to not sign up for every service I can find, so I can only speak to Sample Society, but in general I'm a pretty big fan of the concept.

You get where I'm going with this? Not only is it a MUST for beauty product whores like myself, it's a great present. Head to the website and you can buy a gift membership - 3 months, 6 months or 12 months. Trust me, you'll be the hero of the day if you get this for your little lady.

Here is the "reveal" of this month's box. Check back for reviews in the next week or so as I use the products.

Mondays Blow: Let's Talk About Stars Hollow

I don't know about you but I've had some trouble getting into the Xmas spirit this year. Between work and traveling and the normal daily grind we call life, it has felt more like one of those crappy, cold, uneventful months (yes, I'm talking about you, March) than December. So this weekend I decided to take matters into my own hands and dive headfirst into this crazy holiday. And what luck - Saturday just so happened to be one of my favorite events of the year: Sutter Creek's Old Fashioned Christmas Open House!!

For those of you poor souls that haven't had the pleasure of attending this event, I can summarize it in 2 words: Stars Hollow. And for those of you even poorer souls that don't understand the Stars Hollow reference (Gilmore Girls. Netflix. Get on it.), you'll just have to trust me on this one. This isn't an event so much as it is an experience. It is literally like stepping onto a movie set of a small town during Christmas time and it's the absolute highlight of my December. I highly recommend you make it part of your Xmas tradition.

Unfortunately the weekend was marred by a tragic toe injury, so my outfits consisted mainly of Uggs (which do NOT belong on a pseudo-fashion blog. Ever.). After trying on almost every pair of shoes I own this morning, I managed to shove my club foot into a pair of low wedges and not cry, so I built my outfit around those. It was a perfect opportunity to wear my new black-and-white striped shell that I bought on Black Friday. It's a little prision-esqe yet it's striped, so I feel a bit like a preppy convict. Like I might shiv someone with a fountain pen at any moment. Watch out! :)

Birthday Celebration #1: Fur!

Last weekend was our trek up to the mountains (sans snow, just rain, unfortunately) to celebrate a friend's birthday and I was super excited to finally get a chance to wear my new (faux) fur stole! It was seriously colder than hell up there, so my outfit was my attempt to be warm while still looking feminine and avoiding the kid-in-A-Christmas-Story-stuffed-Michelin-Man look.

I'm not going to lie - my disembodied, invisible Polyvore model pulled the look off WAY better than I did (as usual), but I absolutely loved the concept. I felt like I was in NYC instead of South Lake Tahoe.

Now that the holiday party season is upon us, I'm looking forward to coming up with other festive outfits. This was actually my Plan B outfit, so I'll be busting the Plan A outfit out soon. In fact, tonight is another birthday fiesta so Plan A might have to make its appearance! Hint: It's all about sparkle!

Friday Facelift

In honor of my 1,000th page view (yay!), I've switched things up a bit on my little blog. The new sparkly background makes me feel a tad more festive now that the holidays are officially upon us. I can't say I'm in the spirit just yet, but a few more Pumpkin Spice Lattes and Micheal Bolton Christmas songs may do the trick.

My house is currently tree-less and light-less and I haven't bought one damn present. I better get my butt in gear if I'm going to be Ho-Ho-Ho'ing my way through December, especially considering December starts TOMORROW!

Well, shopping this weekend is out because a whole gang of us are getting bundled up and headed to Tahoe for a weekend of fun and debauchery to celebrate a friend's 30th bday. I couldn't be more excited! There will be lots of wining and dining going on - and awesome snow-worthy outfits, of course! So to kick things off, I leave you with my outfit for today.

When All Else Fails, Wear Micheal Kors

It's official, I have the WORST camera phone ever. I also have the worst hallway lighting ever, apparently, which is why I've decided that I need to move my photos outside at all costs.

If you can somehow get past the horrible photography, please read on.

I see a lot of "Inspiration Outfits" on fashion blogs, and I realized that that's pretty much the only method I've ever used to figure out how not to leave the house naked every day. I have no innate style whatsoever, but I do have a highly honed talent for imitating others. It started with being able to forge my mother's signature in third grade, then evolved into learning how to dance like a pro by watching Paula Abdul videos. I'm the first to admit that everything I've learned about fashion and not looking like a total dog has been stolen directly from my sister, copious magazine subscription and most recently, Pinterest.

So when I ran across this picture and knew I had all the pieces to recreate it,  I decided to use it as my very first "Inspiration Outfit". I love that it used a mint scarf, a piece I bought last summer but have worn only a few times. I was also interested in the black/brown combo, which is usually thought of as a fashion faux pas. I would never think to pair those two colors together on my own, but seeing this brave soul pull it off I figured, 'What the hell, why not?".

I'm not sure I pulled it off quite as well. My boots are TOO brown, I think. I did omit the belt on purpose as I thought it broke up the torso line and looked a little sloppy slung down there on her hips.

I can't say it's my favorite outfit, but I did learn a valuable lesson: Don't think that something will work for you just because someone else is wearing it - even if that person made it on Pinterest. I believe this is where true personal style comes into play. Always wear what you feel GOOD (or hot or sexy or powerful or cozy or whatever) in, not what other people tell you will make you feel that way.  Homegirl looks OK in this, but to me it felt a little BLAH. My saving grace was adding another of my precious MK watches and suddenly all was right with the world. Seriously, you could be wearing a burlap sack and a MK watch will make you feel like a million dollars. Write that down.
You're welcome.

Ciao

Preppy Comfort

Today was a work-from-home day, so my outfit was pretty low key but very comfy. I bought this sweater at the LOFT Factory Store on Black Friday, and I love it. It's preppy (my fav!) but still a little 80's-throwback-cabin-in-the-woodsy. To amp up the prep factor I added my new tan belt with gold hardware, my favorite MK watch/gold bracelet combo and red flats with more gold hardware to tie it all in.

(The best part about this pic is the appearance by two of my adorable dogs!)

Sweater: LOFT Factory Store - Similar
Jeans: Banana Republic Factory Store - (Old)

One more super exciting thing to share: I got a sewing machine!!!  I have wanted to learn to sew forever and  my wonderful Granny, aunt and uncle gave me one for a wedding present. I can't WAIT to start learning and sewing things (note to self: I need a new Pinterest board, STAT!). The first thing on my list are throw pillows. Those are up there on the list of vices I have (hey, it could be a LOT worse) and I am already dreaming about all the possibilities!

Here is my new baby (avec adorable sewing basket for all my goodies!)

Stay tuned for my sewing projects and feel free to offer up tips if you have them!

Local Wine.Dine.Love: Small Business Saturday on Sutter Street

Folsom "Small Business Saturday" Wine.Dine Tour

My friend and I had great intentions when we started a little "adventure" on Saturday, just heading out for lunch and drink(sssss) on Sutter St. in Folsom. If you haven't been there it's kind of  like Old Sac without all the kitch. A old-fashioned street lined with little shops, boutiques, bars, restaurants, theaters, you name it. The geography makes it a perfect place to spend the whole day just eating and drinking and shopping your way from one end to the other....which, as you might have guessed, is precisely what we did. We thought that in honor of Small Business Saturday that we would stick to the small, locally owned places and basically be tourists in our little town. I hope everyone reads this and makes a trip to give Sutter St. some love. Here's our story of the day:

Stop 1: Hampton's - A new "Urban Drink and Eatery": This is a brand new place at the end of the street next to Powerhouse Pub and it drew our interest immediately because of the wraparound balcony overlooking the street. With beautiful, sunny, warm weather on the books, this place and its balcony was a slam dunk. We were pleasantly surprised - everything was fantastic! From the food to the drinks to the service, everything was relaxed, smooth and very, very tasty. Get the Fried Mac & Cheese Balls (to die for!) when you go, you won't be sorry.

Stop 2: Lockdown Brewery: A sister to the local watering hole in a random storage unit in Rancho, this place is just as cool but in a much better setting. Can you say "patio"?  They serve their own microbrew-type beers...and Coors Light. Weird, especially since the that's what the owners were drinking, which is an odd form of marketing - but what do I know? The bar area is attached to the Beach Hut Deli, so if you're in the mood for a sub and some suds, this is your place.

Stop 3: Samuel Horn's Tavern: A new English pub right there on Sutter St.! It feels like hopping across the pond and walking back in time, all at once. A little cavernous, a wide selection of beers on tap, greasy pub food and those little nooks with cushy seats that make you feel like you're getting drunk at a coffee shop. We didn't have any food, but that we'll have to try that next time. I had a Wydmer cider to mix things up a bit and lead us into our next stop.....

Stop 4: The Cellar Wine Bar:  My favorite wine bar in the area, this is a must when I'm on Sutter St. I usually opt for one of their flights which change occasionally to keep things fun. This day it was the Bold Reds flight - 3 nice pours of each of the 3 wine selections. Their wine is stored in those cool sealed coolers with taps so the wine here just seems better than most places - more fresh. They also have a selection of munchies and food, but we were still full from Hampton's and were still working on filling up our "drink" stomachs.

Stop 5: Hacienda: Truthfully, there's nothing spectacular about this place, but when you've been drinking since noon and are craving a taco, this place might as well be the The French Laundry. Oh, and if I remember correctly from my bachelorette party (ha!), their margaritas go down VERY nicely.

At the risk of sounding like a COMPLETE alcoholic, this is not where our little wagon train stopped, but this where we left Sutter St., so this is where our little trip down Sutter St.'s memory lane will wrap up.

Honorable Mention: Her Closet: In between stops we dropped in on a little clothing boutique and did some shopping. This little place is adorable, with a good mix of styles in a decent price range, including accessories and jewelry. I picked up a gorgeous burnt orange cowl neck sweater, a gray open wrap/cardigan and a comfy pair of black leggings (for only $10!). I like finding little places like that. It makes me feel better about spending so much money at the evil, large stores.

Bottom Line: Take a day to check out Sutter St. and all the fun places along its wood-planked banks. There's even an ice skating rink there for the holidays so your kids will have something to do while you're bar hopping. :)

Black (and Gold and Cream and FUR!) Friday

I know, I know. I'm officially the worst blogger EVER.

You have to admit I was on a hot streak there for a while (ok, a week). But it's been radio silence for going on 2 weeks now. Not cool. I have no excuse. In fact, the only reason I can come up with is that I've been "busy", but the kicker is that I've been busy doing awesome things that would be PERFECT to blog about! So let's just pretend this little hiatus didn't happen and get back into the mildly interesting saga that is my life and my retail pursuits.

Speaking of retail pursuits, is it any coincidence that my blog's resurrection is happening on this holiest of all shopping days - Black Friday? I think not....

Don't get me wrong. There isn't enough money on the planet to get me to drag my happy, caffeinated ass down to Walmart to join in the stampede for cheap TVs at 3am. Simply not enough, I tell you. But 10am at the my favorite yuppy-packed outlets? Count me in!

It's probably not a secret that 90% of my wardrobe is purchased at the Banana Republic Factory Store, so it shouldn't be a surprise that that was the first stop on today's shopping excursion. Hey, when something works it works and a little consistency in life is, in my book, a great thing. Another great thing is that there is a coupon in almost every US Weekly if you look closely enough so I never pay even CLOSE to full price for anything. Win, Win.

The bad news is that the factory store is not online so it's almost impossible to find photos of my purchases to post on this here blog. This means that I either have to find "similar" items - which are never exact, of course, or I have to actually start taking pictures of my outfits. I know I keep threatening to do it, but now with a little extra hallway lighting and full-length mirror in place I think I'm ready.

Well, almost ready. The night is no longer young and I'm in no mood to get off my couch, so the pics will have to wait until tomorrow. For now, sit back and enjoy the best "similar" items I could find that do my fabulous new treasures justice.

Banana Republic Factory Store - Lots of regular sale prices PLUS an extra 40% off clearance

Grey Blazer - $38.25 ($149)

Tan belt w/ gold hardware - $14.87 ($34.99)

Oatmeal cowl neck sweater - $14.78 ($28.99)

Cream silk tie halter - $29.74 ($49.99)

Faux fur stole/scarf (My favorite piece!) - $25.49 ($49.99)

Black leather bracelet w/ gold hardware - $10.62 ($24.99)

Lucite jeweled necklace - $16.99 ($39.99)

I'm pretty excited about mu haul today. I feel like I got pieces that look and feel expensive and luxurious without paying an arm and a leg for them. That's the key for us real girls who live in the real world. Always keep your eyes open for quality!!

Ciao for now.

Jackets and Blazers and Vests, Oh My!!

My favorite time of the year has arrived! No, not Christmas or Wine & Chocolate or even football season....it's Old Navy's Outerware Sale!!!

All jackets are 50% off in stores (less online, but still on sale!)!!! I'm seriously like a kid in a candy store when this puppy rolls around.

I know what you're thinking. Old Navy may not be known for its quality but trust me on this one. My Old Navy jackets have lasted WAY longer then I ever expected them to. I own a gazillion of them and I don't think I've ever had one crap out on me. I have a trench that dates back to college...and that's saying something, friends.

Here are a few of my favs (prices are online, will be less in store):
Leopard (For you spicy gals) - $35.00

Tweed-esque - $24.50

Classic White (I own way too many of these) - $45.00

Comfy Vests - $14.50

Did someone say "ruffle"!? - $59.00

I'm AM going to own something with fur this winter - $39.50

There are even blazers!!

Another obsession of mine - $35.00
If you shop online make sure to spend more than $50 to get free shipping or use my other trick of also buying something from Piperlime (Extra 15% off right now! Use code EXTRA15) and then shipping is always free for the whole order.

Tonight I'm off to a Lia Sophia jewelry party so I'll be sure to have some pretty things to talk about tomorrow.

Ciao!

Elections Blues...and Reds

I don't know about you but last night's election results left me downright depressed. This isn't the place for political rants but let me just say that the thought of moving to Antarctica is looking more and more appealing (my jacket collection would sure come in handy, wouldn't it?). Then again, don't communists wear tall boots and furry hats? Looks like I'm set to stay in the States after all! ;)

OK, I'm done, I swear.

In honor of Election Day, I put together this patriotic outfit and for a few hours it actually gave me hope. I mean, doesn't a bright red shirt just scream "Republicans FTW!"? Apparently not. (Sorry, that one just slipped out..)

Blazer: BR Outlet, Shirt: Ann Taylor, Skirt: BR Outlet, Shoes: Nine West, Watch: MK

Later in the evening as I sat watching the country slowly circle the drain (last one, I promise), I decided that this oh-so-special occasion deserved to be saluted with a nice RED wine.

Wine: Cupcake Vineyards - Red Velvet: A blend of Zinfandel, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah. You can usually find it at Costco for around $8.

Taste:  I love this wine, but it's not for everyone. It's rich and fruity but mellow and dark like chocolate. The best part is the finish which is literally creamy with hints of vanilla and coconut.

Experience: You mean besides the weeping? I ate it with leftover pizza (see Paesanos post) in my backyard, which are two are my favorite things, so all in all the night wasn't such a nightmare?

And just in case the adorable outfit and delicious wine didn't make you forget about the state of our communist nation, I leave you with this parting gift. Enjoy!

Channing Tatum named as People Magazine's Sexiest Man Alive....do you agree??

Better Late Than Never: Paesanos Midtown

My husband and I met 4 years and 7 months ago. You know how I remember that? Because he was exactly 7 months late taking me on our our 4th Annual First Date Anniversary dinner. I suppose I should cut him some slack considering we had a few other things going on these past 7 months (two weddings and a trip to Italy to name a few), but that's just not my style. So finally my prodding wore him down and last night I got my date night!

Our first date was at Paesanos in Midtown Sacramento, one of my favorite restaurants for a number of different reasons.

Common sense dictates that the entire point of a restaurant is to enjoy the food, but Hubs and I have our own ranking systems and food is not even in the top 3. As far are we're concerned it goes:

1) Patio
2) Service
3) Wine List/Beers on Tap
4) Food

Paesanos aces all four categories (heated patio+string lights=extra credit).

They are known for their pizzas, but everything is pretty damn tasty. True story: On our actual first date we only ate bread and were so wrapped up in conversation we forgot to eat dinner. So every year we order the bread as a nod to that fateful night, but have since wised up and now order actual dinner. This time we split the Sicilian pizza (onions on half!) which was salty and spicy and chewy like a good pizza should be. The wine list is short but sweet (Lambrusco, anyone?), and their beers are the the good microbrew kind you find at a lot at places that have a little hipster in their bloodline (Racer 5, Great White and my personal fav, Monkey Knife Fight).

My choices were a glass of Boeger Barbera and one of the Graffigna Malbec (see previous Malbec-related post). Both were good, neither were great. I ran into the unfortunate case of being served bottles that had probably been opened over the weekend and tasted a little stale. Nothing to write a blog about, as they say. Oops.....

Seriously, though, go to Paesanos if you're in the area and looking for a casual, fun and delicious meal. I've even heard the inside is nice, but you'd be hard pressed to find me anywhere but the patio!

What I Wore:

BTW, how fabulous is this jacket? This is one of the treasures from my shopping expedition at H&M this past weekend. I wore it to our date and I'm officially obsessed. I love me some ruffles on my jackets! The next time I wear this I'll pair it with a scarf. Oh, the possibilities....

Question: What would you wear this with?

Jacket: H&M (also available in black)

Mondays Blow. Let's Talk About Shopping.

My original plan for this post was to talk about some of my problems, but let's be honest, neither you nor I have that much time.

Seriously though, I have issues. Not like Lindsay Lohan has issues, but issues nonetheless. For instance, I hate things that are round. And I am literally terrified to use the phone. Listing my quirks (that's what I like to call them) would take all day, but there are couple that I think are fantastic fodder for blog content, especially when it comes to fashion (my unhealthy relationship with jackets or Michel Kors watches, for instance). Before we dive into that craziness, though, let's start slow and start with the standard girl obsession  - shopping!

{I probably should have prefaced this whole blog by warning everyone that I don't actually have a freaking clue what I'm talking about. I'm in no position to preach a GD thing about fashion or wine or anything for that matter. I just know that I really enjoy these particular things, among many others, and if someone gets a little pleasure from my ranting or even learns a little something from what I have to say then I've made a little difference  and that makes me smile.}

Now that that little disclaimer is out of the way, we can move on.

Yesterday was one of those glorious shopping days where you come home with sore arms laden with shiny bags full of so many good deals you feel like you just robbed the mall. My sister and I spent the day hitting up our favorite regular haunts, including the new H&M in town (which was fab!). I did some damage, as usual, but I now have this blog to blame it on. I mean, I need to shop for new things so I have something to talk about, right? (I can just feel my husband's eyes rolling).

The day resulted in lots of Fall Wardrobe Enhancements to talk about in future posts, so as always, stay tuned. For now, here is the outfit I wore shopping.

Sweater: BR Outlet, Shirt: American Eagle, Pants: BR Outlet, Shoes: ALDO, Watch: Micheal Kors
Fashion Tip

Both my sister and I believe in dressing strategically when attempting a retail marathon. The key here is "minimal", or "easy off, easy on". Unless you're a dude, you're going to be try everything on (you DO try everything on, right??). This means you'll be spending most of your time undressing and redressing, so your "dressing"should be  simple. Choose outfits with as few layers, fasteners, zippers, and accessories as possible. There's nothing worse than wrestling your ass into and out of those skinny jeans, socks and do-me boots 10 different times. All that sucking in and you're getting into dangerous pass-out territory, my friends. Trust me.

My outfit this time included slip-on flats and skinny (but not TOO skinny) pants, which are perfect shopping staples. I also wore a button up shirt and cardigan which kind of violates the minimal fasteners rule, but it's actually a great idea. Wearing a button up eliminates the horrible makeup smears that inevitably end up all over everything I try on. Also, I rolled the cuffs of the shirt OVER the cuffs of the cardigan (LOVE doing this), which makes them connected so they come off/go on as one piece. Throw a neutral tank or cami underneath and, bam, you have a great base layer you can leave on for items that need a little something underneath.

Speaking of underthings, Rule #2 is to ALWAYS wear a nude bra and undies when shopping. It's not sexy, but it sure helps to not look like a prostitute when trying on that white Easter dress.

I'm positively giddy thinking about the new items now residing in my closet. Hopefully I can get my s**t together and think up some fun outfits this week. Happy Monday, friends!

Friday, (Ox)Bloody Friday...

It's not a secret that Friday is up there on my list of favorite days of the week. Once that proverbial bell rings and I survive the grueling 4-mile commute home from work, I rush to check the mail like a 12 year old waiting for her signed One Direction poster. Because to me Friday means one thing: a new US Weekly and a glass of wine. OK, two things.

Anyway, that's the start of my weekend in a nutshell. More often than not I also make a sizable dent in my DVR's queue, not to mention the junk food section of my pantry. I don't know what it is about Friday that makes me feel like a death row convict on a weekend pass in Vegas, but I sure do enjoy the hell out of it.

This Friday was particularly awesome because I received one of my favorite fall wardrobe enhancements (how much better does they sound than "unnecessary online impulse purchase"?) in the mail yesterday and got to bust them out!!

If you have a pulse and a vagina (or wish you had one), you know that you can't swing a dead cat these days without hitting something "oxblood"-colored. The faint of heart call it burgundy or maroon or berry, but I personally like the edgy name. And I'm OBSESSED with the color. So when I ordered these boots online I couldn't wait to wear them. They scream "fabulous", "sexy", "trendy". Too bad I have no idea how to actually dress like any of those adjectives. All I could come up with in my fog filled brain this morning was this yawn-inducing, albeit cozy as hell, ensemble.

(You see that print? Guess what it is?...BIRDS! Apparently Old Navy is going a through a bird stage - see previous post - and apparently I'm all aboard. Who knew?)

I hope to improve on this in the future. These puppies are simply too cute to keep under wraps. Stay tuned for more fun posts featuring my favorite new fall color.

In conclusion, I must apologize for the dull Friday post. I had much bigger plans that were thwarted by the Hubs' fantasy basketball draft which took priority over my blogging. Four computers, two iPads and I'm somehow still left to peck this post out on my phone like a Quaker. First world problems, right? OK, I'm done complaining.

Until next time, friends!
